Ecotourism and nature-based tourism

Experiences in nature are a key drawcard for visitors to the Scenic Rim and nature-based tourism is a significant and fast-growing sector in Queensland’s tourism industry, ranking among top travel motivators for visitors.

The Scenic Rim’s unique environment, wildlife and cultural heritage, provides our local tourism industry with a competitive advantage – but it must be appropriately protected, managed and developed.

Ecotourism is ecologically sustainable tourism in natural areas. It fosters environmental and cultural understanding, and appreciation for and conservation of nature.

The Scenic Rim Regional Council has commenced the process  to obtain internationally recognised Ecotourism certification for the region with Ecotourism Australia, through their partnership with WWF-Australia.

As travellers become more ecologically aware and seek nature-based tourism accommodation, experiences and attractions, supporting tourism operators delivering these experiences is a priority for the Scenic Rim region.

Agri-tourism and food tourism

Agritourism, or food tourism, is becoming an increasingly important sector of the Australian economy, providing benefits to Australian agribusinesses and regional economies. Food and wine experiences are being increasingly sought after as consumers desire to better understand where their food comes from, learn how it is produced and experience the ultimate in low food miles by enjoying produce where it is produced.

The Scenic Rim has been evolving as an agrifood and agritourism destination for many years. As a predominantly rural area with a strong agricultural sector, including a diverse range of award-winning artisanal producers, the region is well-equipped to develop as a leading destination for food and wine experiences in Australia.

In August 2019, the Scenic Rim was awarded the ‘Most Outstanding Region’ at the prestigious delicious Produce Awards. The region continues to shine on the national stage for its authentic local food movement, underpinned by the highly successful annual Scenic Rim Eat Local Week initiative.
